Reader’s Question:

I just want to know how long do I have to carry an sr22. Someone told me that its for 3 years? is this correct? If I don’t drive for 3 years, will I still be needing this sr22? I live in VT.

Renee

Thank you for asking Renee.

According to the Vermont State statues an individuals who are required to file Financial Responsibility Insurance with the VT Department of Motor Vehicles must carry this car insurance for a minimum of 3 years. If there is a lapse or cancelled this type of car insurance coverage the person is issued a license suspension which would not be reinstated until valid coverage is active on file again.

Vermont’s Department of Motor Vehicles has very specific requirements on the filing of Financial Responsibility Insurance. This will accept only certain documents (i.e. an SR-22 certificate from an insurance provider and NOT from an insurance agent) that are completed in compliance with these strict requirements.

According to the wording of the Vermont Statues on this you would need the SR-22 certificate for 3 years once your drivers license has been reinstated (not from when you became eligible). You may contact the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles to verify this information.

Goodluck!
