Reader’s Question:

My boyfriend’s license was suspended yesterday. He was required to get an SR22 certificate. How do we get one?

Lily

Montgomery ALsr22 certificate

In order to take away the suspension on your boyfriend’s license, an SR22 certificate filing is required. This document is generally issued by an insurance company. This document is a proof to the state Department of Motor Vehicles that your boyfriend has been covered by the minimum liability coverage of the state.

Your boyfriend must get a minimum liability insurance coverage of the state on all vehicles registered under his name. If he don’t own any vehicle, he can get a non-owner liability coverage. A driver’s license can be suspended for any of the following reason: driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance, unpaid traffic fines and other violations of DMV traffic rules.

Generally, an SR22 certificate should be kept for a minimum period of 3 years or longer based on the seriousness of his violation. An insurance company needs to inform the State Department of Motor Vehicles if the SR22 terminated. If the SR22 is terminated, your boyfriend’s license gets suspended again.

Filing for an SR22 can be completed in just 24 hours. You can log on to the Internet for a quicker way of getting SR22 quotes from several insurance companies. You are only required to answer a questionnaire to get a free quote. For a faster transaction, call the insurer’s hotline and get an instant estimate of your SR22 from a live insurance agent.

One of the processes involved in reinstating a suspended license is to contact your state DMV on any fees to be settled, such as a reinstatement fee. Another procedure is to obtain ahead from the DMV a copy of your Driving Record Report. Some insurance company may require this report as a condition of issuance of SR22 certificate. This report plays an important role to insurers for the best pricing of their quote.

How To Get Cheap SR22 certificate

Reader’s Question:

What is SR22 certificate and what could be the reasons my brother has to get it here in Massachusetts? Why does he have to pay more for his car insurance and how can he lessen that payment?

Melvin

Lowell, MA

If a driver was caught violating traffic regulations like DUI or over speeding, the state’s department of vehicle would demand that he/she gets SR22 certificate to continue driving. This works like an insurance ID, vouching that the driver has the required car insurance coverage. Unlike a typical car insurance policy, however, SR22 insurance is very expensive because it is carried by high risk drivers. If your brother has SR22 insurance, he needs to continue paying for it for the next 3 years. Failure to pay his monthly premiums can have his insurance company cancel it. To get more affordable car insurance, he can visit the Internet that has tons of cheap car insurance rate quote websites.

SR22 certificate is issued by a car insurance company to the state’s department of vehicles. This is to prove that the holder has the required minimum car insurance coverage. It should be noted that not all car insurance companies issue this kind of certificate. Those who give out SR22 insurance are likely to charge very expensive rates for it.

Drivers who have SR22 insurance should carry it every time they drive their vehicles. They should also be prompt in paying their car insurance premiums since car insurance companies can cancel it without prior notice, especially those who are not able to pay premiums on time.

Your brother can still purchase cheap car insurance with SR22 in Massachusetts if he searches the Internet. There are a lot of cheap SR22 insurance companies that can give him lower car insurance rates than those offered by general insurance companies. It also helps if he has a good credit rating when applying for cheap car insurance with SR22.

He can also try to request as much car insurance with SR22 quotes as he can get to be able to purchase one that fits his budget.

What Is SR22 Insurance

Reader’s Question:

I am 17 and recently got my driver’s license, but my parents want me to know about car insurance before giving me a car of my own. However, I am confused by sr22 insurance. So, what is sr22 insurance?

Aaron

Phoenix, AZ

Aaron, you have such wonderful parents. Of course, no matter how much they train you to be a good and precautionary driver, it will always come down to what choices you make. I believe, too, that knowing how the car industry works will make a driver more responsible. But as they say, Aaron, knowing is just half the battle. Knowing the potential consequences of what certain actions you might take in the future with regards to driving (since you’re a teenager, which would make you susceptible to drunk driving) will at least give you a sense of responsibility to your self and to other motorists.

So, Aaron, what is SR22 insurance?
SR22s are not car insurance policies, but they are documents relating to your car insurance policy. They simply are documents stating that you have an active car insurance coverage. Usually, an SR22 is issued if the policy holder is convicted of a traffic violation and cannot show proof of financial responsibility. Also, SR22s are issued if so ordered by a judge but this will depend on what state you are in. Filings of SR22s are made by the insurance companies and not by the insured. Who better to certify that you are indeed insured than your car insurance provider? If you live happen to move into states like Kentucky, New Mexico, Delaware Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Minnesota, you should know they don’t require issuance of SR-22s. Aaron, remember this, getting SR-22 forms are not good to have because this means you have incurred violations. Having SR-22s will probably raise your car insurance premiums, as well.

How To Get My Drivers License Back in Florida

Reader’s Question:

Are there any other way I can get my drivers license back without having to file for an SR22 insurance form here in Florida?

Victor

Hollywood, FL

Unfortunately no, the state of Florida requires motorists who have had their drivers license suspended due to committing serious driving violations, such as DUI (Driving Under the Influence) also known as DWI (Driving While Intoxicated), driving without a license, or without carrying car insurance, incurring too many moving violations and too frequent involvement in car accidents, to file an SR22 insurance form or certification in order to get their driving privileges re-instated.

You will need to find an authorized car insurance provider that will file the necessary SR22 insurance form to the state DMV or Department of Motor Vehicles in your behalf, that said, not all auto insurance companies are allowed to process SR22 filings. After paying the necessary reinstatement fees, It may take up to 30 days for the whole process to complete before you get a notification of your SR22 status as well as to know when you can drive again.

We also encourage you not to lose your insurance through cancellation, nor allow your SR22 policy to lapse since this can lead to even more severe penalties, and may be good reason for your next auto insurance carrier to increase your rates significantly. You would only need to maintain your SR22 for a period of two years and maintain a good driving record during that time.

One of the best ways to find a provider that can offer you SR22 insurance forms is through the Web. This website has an insurance search tool that you may use for free to get the most affordable rates and policies online.

What Is the Difference Between SR22 Insurance Non Owner

Reader’s Question:

Hi! Is there any difference between the SR 22 non owners insurance policy and SR 22 insurance policy?

Josh

Little Rock, AR

SR 22 insurance form is required to drivers who have been caught of several traffic violations such as driving without the required insurance coverage and DUI. SR 22 insurance form is issued by insurance companies to the state’s department of motor vehicles and acts as a certification that the driver has the coverage in case of future road troubles.

SR 22 insurance policy is given to those who have their own vehicles and run into traffic violations as indicated earlier. If you do not have your own vehicle and you are required to have SR 22 insurance form, then you need to get the SR 22 non owner insurance policy. This insurance allows you to drive a vehicle you rented or borrowed even after you were charged with any of the mentioned traffic violations.

Remember that getting an SR 22- whether it is for car owners or non-car owners- can be pretty hard since insurers do not just give certification for high risk drivers, so be sure to shop around for good insurance companies that can provide you with SR 22.

What Does Non Owners SR22 Auto Insurance Cover

Reader’s Question:

Does non-owners SR22 insurance cover policy holders in uninsured cars?

Richard

Little Rock, AR

I would suggest that you verify that any car you drive is insured and not rely upon SR-22 insurance to provide the necessary vehicle coverage. The car owner is required to insure it. Your non-owners SR22 policy would be secondary to that car insurance policy. Typically a non-owners SR-22 policy doesn’t contained coverage for the car (Physical Damage) or other necessary coverages like PIP, UM, and/or PD.

If you borrow a car from a someone and get into an accident while using that car, your friend’s insurance would kick in first. But if, for instance, the accident was your fault and the damage to the other motorist’s property exceeded the liability limits on your friend’s policy, your non owners insurance policy would cover the excess (up to policy limits).

How Long Do I Have to Carry SR22 Insurance In Vermont

Reader’s Question:

I just want to know how long do I have to carry an sr22 auto insurance certificate. Someone told me that its for 3 years? is this correct? If I don’t drive for 3 years, will I still be needing this sr22? I live in VT.

Renee

Thank you for asking Renee.

According to the Vermont State statues an individuals who are required to file Financial Responsibility Insurance with the VT Department of Motor Vehicles must carry this car insurance for a minimum of 3 years. If there is a lapse or cancelled this type of car insurance coverage the person is issued a license suspension which would not be reinstated until valid coverage is active on file again.

Vermont’s Department of Motor Vehicles has very specific requirements on the filing of Financial Responsibility Insurance. This will accept only certain documents (i.e. an SR-22 certificate from an insurance provider and NOT from an insurance agent) that are completed in compliance with these strict requirements.

According to the wording of the Vermont Statues on this you would need the SR-22 certificate for 3 years once your drivers license has been reinstated (not from when you became eligible). You may contact the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles to verify this information.

Goodluck!

When Do You Need an SR22 Certificate In Tennessee

Reader’s Question:

I have not reinstated my license yet since after 4 years of DUI conviction. Do I need an sr22 Certificate? I live in TN.

Chris

Thank you for asking Chris.

A single DUI conviction in Tennessee can cost an person quite a bit after all the fines and fees have been paid. The potential costs of a TN DUI conviction may include:

* Fines
* Court Costs
* Bail
* Towing and storage fees
* Attorney fees
* Alcohol education program enrollment
* Driver license reinstatement fees
* Ignition interlock program costs
* Higher insurance premiums and SR-22 filing

I you want to get your license reinstated after a DUI conviction, one of the requirements is to provide proof of a SR-22 filing by your insurance provider. Waiting 4 years to reinstate your drivers license seems to negate the need for the SR-22 form to be filed. You can verify with the TN Department of Safety to make sure about your specific situation.

Goodluck!
